Lakeland Senior Center. Connell started with conversation on how vital balance is to normal everyday living. As a physical therapy specialist, he described what happens when balance issues develop and discussed ways to prevent falls. He even put participants to a non- strenuous balance test, by asking those that wanted to participate, to stand and sit fives time within a few seconds. The hour- long presentation filled with facts and tips gave many a good sense on just how steady they are, or are not. Linda Doyle said of the workshop, “It was very informative and makes you realize how vulnerable you are to falls. There was a lot of good information shared during the event. I’m glad I came.”“For me the most important message was ‘don’t ignore it,’” Doyle added.
We are all good at ignoring it and thinking, oh it will get better. I think we were all reminded why we should not wait around to go to the doctor.”. Approximately 5. 0 guests followed suit for the occasion, dressing in patriotic apparel and coming out for a spectacular evening of fun and entertainment, and a chance to win the “Best Patriotic Dressed,” award. The event started with all heads bowed, as retired Chaplain, Randy Brown presented the Benediction; followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Veterans in attendance were asked to remain standing to be recognized.
The sound of applause rang out as veterans stood with pride. All guests stood again, and joined in patriotic harmony, as singer/keyboardist and event entertainer, Charles Norman, performed the National Anthem. A traditional patriotic menu of pulled pork, buns, slaw, Barbecue beans, chips, and banana pudding, catered by Pink Flamingo Catering was served buffet- style, along with chicken fingers donated by Zaxby’s Lakeland, lasagna, along with a variety of desserts. Participants of the Lakeland Senior Center’s (LSC) Valentine’s Day Lunch and Movie got all that and little more today (2. As guests enjoyed music and songs by the trio, they were treated to a catered lunch of Zaxby’s chicken, along with fresh salad greens and dessert. Lakeland City Manager, Jim Atkinson, dropped by to wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day. After lunch, some guests stayed to watch the movie “Elsa and Fred,” a romantic comedy starring Shirley Mac.

The shopping bags were gifts to those attending the Heart Health seminar courtesy of Sprouts Farmers Market. The shopping bags were already filled with all kinds of heart health brochures and magazines, as well as, a variety of vitamin and supplement samples before seniors were presented an opportunity to shop for fruits and vegetables at the market stand set up by Sprouts at LSC. Sprouts partnered up with the Lakeland Senior Center to honor good health by visiting the senior center to present good health tips for a healthy lifestyle. The topic was vitamins, supplements and the importance of getting daily nutritional needs. David Tillman, assistant vitamin manager for Sprouts, talked to seniors about the importance of vitamins and introduced a variety of supplements to the group. Tillman shared many reasons why vitamins are vital to good heart health.
He encouraged seniors to exercise, eat plenty of green vegetables, take a multiple vitamin every day, as well as fish oil for Omega 3. For those who have trouble tolerating vitamins, he suggested making a fresh smoothie each day, adding in vitamins and supplements to it. Get your daily nutritional needs in one glass,” said Tillman.

Chili was on at the first “Just for Fun! Chili Cook Off,” Oct. Lakeland Senior Center - - and so was the competition as participants threw together their chili recipes for the judged contest. Some of the recipes were longtime family recipes, while others were created solely by these participating amateur chefs.
